Knitting Level 3: Toe-Up Socks

In this class, you will be making socks one at a time from the toe-up on a circular needle, using the magic loop technique.

The pattern is provided for this class but students are required to purchase their own yarn, needles, and notions. Students get a 15% discount on materials purchased for their class.

Please measure your feet before the first class to determine the size you will make.

4 sessions x 2 hours.

Supplies to Purchase

  • Approximately 350 m of DK weight yarn in light or bright colours (the amount of yarn used will depend on what size you make). Suggested:
    • Berroco Vintage Baby, Berroco Vintage DK, Drops Fiesta, Ella Rae Snuggles, Sirdar Snuggly DK
  • 3.25 mm (US 3), 80 cm (32”) circular needle
  • 1 locking stitch marker
  • Measuring tape
  • Tapestry needle
  • Please remember to measure your feet before first class

Lesson Plan

Before First Class

  • Measure your feet to determine what size you’re knitting.

Class 1

  • Learn the anatomy of a sock
  • Intro to magic loop
  • Judy’s magic cast on
  • Knit toe
  • Homework: Knit the foot until the gusset

Class 2

  • Knit gusset
  • Turn the heel with short rows

Class 3

  • Continue turning the heel 
  • Pick up stitches for heel flap
  • Knit leg
  • Homework: Finish knitting leg and ribbing, ending just before bind off

Class 4

  • Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off
  • Weave in tails
  • Start second sock
